NORTHEASTERN STATE UNIVERSITY - UNIVERSITY CENTER
NSU asked for concepts for redesigning the University Center's Existing bowling and pool hall into a student lounge with a late night, full service restaurant and coffee bar with a fun, relaxed environment. This under-construction multi-use facility will house pool tables, a fireplace, lounge and bar top seating, and a stage for various student organizational performances. The leaders of the student body, along with administration staff, were involved in the programming and design process. Their goal is to renovate the space into an eclectic yet comfortable space that would encourage students to congregate during all hours of the day.
The design concept expanded to include recycled architectural details to not only tie in the typical atmosphere of a small coffee shop but to also emphasize environmental responsibility. The reuse of old, rustic, paneled doors as the ceiling for the restaurant set the character for the rest of the space. Reused doors and windows will be recycled into divider panels and either be painted with chalkboard paint or covered in cork board to allow for student creativity and communication.
Around the stage area, a collage of old music/band posters will create a unique back drop to any performance. All of the exposed columns will be covered in recycled brick, taken from demolition of existing campus buildings. Along with the reuse of the old, traditional pieces, modern elements, such as wall graphics, contemporary light pendant fixtures, track lighting, and bright colors will be used to appeal to all student body personality types.
